Goz Beida is the capital of the Sila region in eastern Chad, not far from the border with Sudan. From above, it has a loose, low-density layout typical of towns in the Sahel. Compounds and lanes spread out over sandy ground, main tracks cross the town, and the built area fades gradually into open land rather than ending in a sharp line.
The town is widely known for its role in humanitarian response. Since the mid-2000s, it has been a base for aid operations serving people displaced by conflict in the region, as well as refugees from Darfur who live in nearby camps. Seasonal watercourses, known as wadis, run through the surrounding landscape. Dry for most of the year, they fill during the rainy season.
A Goz Beida map poster records a town that few maps show in any detail. Its pattern is irregular and open, and the tracks that link it to the region's villages and camps stretch into empty space. The result is a light, airy composition. For people who have lived or worked here, it is a precise and personal image of a remote place.

Watercourses cross the surrounding land. They are dry for most of the year but shape where roads and buildings can go.
Unpaved routes lead out to villages and camps across Sila. They appear as thin lines running into the open landscape.

Ko e ha Goz Beida
