Gradignan lies on the southwestern edge of Bordeaux, just inside the ring road that circles the metropolis. On the map it is a finely grained suburb. Tree-lined residential streets and detached houses spread out on all sides. Small parks and wooded strips follow the valley of the Eau Bourde, a stream that winds through the commune and gives the street pattern a soft green seam.
The town has long been a stop on the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela. The old Cayac priory, a former hospice for pilgrims, still stands on the route south.
