Greensboro lies in the rolling Piedmont of North Carolina. Its map combines a compact downtown grid with leafy neighbourhoods whose streets curve around creeks and gentle slopes. North of the city, a chain of reservoirs, Lake Brandt, Lake Higgins and Lake Townsend, stretches across the landscape as long, branching water shapes surrounded by greenways and woods.
The city holds a significant place in American history. In 1960 four students from North Carolina A&T sat down at the whites-only lunch counter of the Woolworth store on Elm Street, starting a sit-in movement that spread across the South. The building now houses the International Civil Rights Center and Museum. In 1781 the Battle of Guilford Courthouse was fought on the city's northwestern edge.
Interstates 40 and 85 run together along the south of the city, and the newer Urban Loop circles much of it. A Greensboro map poster shows these highways framing campuses such as UNC Greensboro and North Carolina A&T, the downtown blocks and the tree-lined residential streets that make up most of the city.
The historic core is laid out along Elm Street, a straight commercial spine where the 1960 sit-ins began and around which the downtown grid is organised.
Lake Brandt, Lake Higgins and Lake Townsend form a branching band of water north of the city, their shorelines softening the upper part of the map.
The Revolutionary War battlefield is preserved as a national military park, a green space with winding paths among the suburbs of northwest Greensboro.
