Grytviken was founded in 1904 by the Norwegian whaler Carl Anton Larsen and became one of the principal whaling stations of the Southern Ocean. Whaling ended here in the 1960s, and today the settlement is largely a preserved industrial site with a museum and a church, visited by expedition ships and looked after by a very small seasonal staff.
The station lies on King Edward Cove, a sheltered inlet off Cumberland East Bay on the northern coast of South Georgia. Nearby, at King Edward Point, a small government and research base houses the island's administration. On a map the built area is tiny, a few tracks and structures on a narrow shore, overshadowed by mountains and glacier-fed valleys.
Grytviken is also where the explorer Ernest Shackleton was buried in 1922, after he died aboard his ship at anchor off the island. A Grytviken map poster sets the cove within its dramatic surroundings, the long arms of Cumberland Bay and the peaks behind, so that it becomes a portrait of one of the most remote landscapes of the Southern Ocean.
The small, protected cove holds the whaling station on its shore, a rounded inlet that shelters the settlement from the open water of Cumberland Bay.
The large, branching bay reaches deep into the island, its east and west arms cutting between mountain ridges and dominating the wider view on the map.
Across the cove, a short spit of land holds the research station and government offices, a second small cluster facing the old whaling works.

Ko e ha Grytviken
Grytviken appeals to admirers of Shackleton and polar exploration, to expedition travellers who have stepped ashore there, and to anyone who has worked in the South Atlantic. Its dramatic coastline and tiny footprint make a powerful image, especially at large sizes such as 50×70 cm.
Personalise the title and subtitle, perhaps with the date of a landing, and add a coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. HD files cost $9 with no watermark, and printed matte posters ship from partners in 30+ countries.
