Guojia is in south-eastern Gansu, in the loess hill country that covers much of this part of north-western China. On a map the town follows a valley floor, with its streets arranged along the main road and a stream, while the land on either side rises into hills cut by gullies. The built area is compact, limited by the shape of the valley around it.
The loess plateau is shaped by wind-blown soil that erodes easily, so the hills here are carved into ridges and ravines. For generations farmers have terraced the slopes, and those terraces give the landscape a layered look from above.
