Ko e mape
Gwangju is the largest city in the Honam region of south-western Korea. It sits in a basin opening westward toward the Yeongsan River, with Mudeungsan, a broad mountain protected as a national park, rising on its eastern side. On a map, the city's dense grid of apartment blocks and streets presses up against the forested slopes, which form a clear dark edge.
The Gwangjucheon stream flows from the mountain through the heart of the city and on to the Yeongsan River, its banks lined with walking paths and parks. It draws a winding line across the grid, crossed by numerous bridges. The old downtown lies close to the stream, while newer districts such as Sangmu have been laid out in regular blocks further west.
Gwangju is known across Korea for the May 18 Democratic Uprising of 1980, and the former South Jeolla Provincial Office at the centre of those events now forms part of the Asia Culture Center. The city also hosts the Gwangju Biennale, a major international contemporary art exhibition. A Gwangju map poster reflects a city of mountains, streams and civic memory.

Built on the site of the former provincial office in the old downtown, it occupies a large open block beside the square where the 1980 uprising took place.

Ko e ha Gwangju
Gwangju is home to many families and students, and for some it holds a deep historical meaning. A map of its streets, framed by the mountain and threaded by the stream, is a quiet way to mark that connection.
