Hamilton became Bermuda's capital in 1815, taking over the role from the older town of St. George's, and it has since grown into the island's commercial and administrative centre. It is a small city by any measure, but its sheltered harbour and its role in international finance and insurance give it an importance well beyond its size.
The map shows an unusually regular street plan for an island town. Front Street follows the harbour edge, and a grid of parallel and cross streets rises behind it toward higher ground, where Fort Hamilton overlooks the city. Across the water, the harbour is scattered with small islands and inlets, and the long, ragged shoreline of Bermuda frames the scene.
Among the recognisable buildings are the Cathedral of the Most Holy Trinity and the Cabinet Building. A Hamilton map poster sets the dense grid against the island-studded water of Hamilton Harbour and the looser roads of the surrounding parish, producing a small, legible city portrait from the middle of the Atlantic.
The waterfront street runs along the harbour edge and defines the city's lower side, the line from which the rest of the grid climbs uphill.
Hamilton Harbour is scattered with small islands and inlets, turning the lower part of the map into an intricate pattern of shoreline and water.
The nineteenth-century fort sits on higher ground above the city, its outline and surrounding roads marking the upper edge of the compact centre.

Ko e ha Hamilton
Hamilton appeals to people who have worked in its offices, sailed into its harbour or celebrated a wedding on the island. The grid is tidy and legible, and the harbour's islands add detail around it, so the print holds up well at larger sizes such as 50×70 cm or 24×36″.
Change the title, subtitle and coordinates line to mark a date or a personal note, and choose from five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Download HD files for $9, or order a printed poster on matte paper with an optional wooden frame.
