Hamm stands at the eastern edge of the Ruhr, and its map is shaped by lines of movement. The Lippe River and the Datteln-Hamm Canal run roughly parallel through the northern part of the city, while a large railway junction and marshalling yard spread wide bands of track across the landscape.
