Hammond is in the northwest corner of Indiana, directly bordering Chicago along the state line. Its northern edge meets Lake Michigan, where the shoreline is lined with industrial sites, a marina and a lakefront casino. From above, the city is a dense street grid divided by rail lines, expressways and the waterways of the Calumet region.
The Grand Calumet and Little Calumet rivers cross the city in long, low curves, and Wolf Lake lies on the Illinois–Indiana line to the north. Railway corridors cut diagonally through the grid, reflecting the city's industrial past. The mix of straight blocks, angled tracks and irregular water creates an unusually layered map.
