Hamtramck is a small city in Michigan surrounded almost entirely by Detroit, with neighbouring Highland Park forming part of its edge. It covers only about two square miles. From above, it is a dense, regular grid of narrow residential lots, with commercial corridors such as Joseph Campau Avenue running through it and rail lines and industrial land at its edges.
In the early twentieth century, the Dodge brothers' plant attracted many Polish immigrants, and the city became closely associated with Polish-American culture. In more recent decades, Yemeni, Bangladeshi and Bosnian communities have grown, and in 2021 Hamtramck elected what was reported as the first all-Muslim city council in the United States.
