Hanworth lies in the London Borough of Hounslow, in the far west of the city, a few miles south of Heathrow Airport. On a map it reads as a suburb of mostly twentieth-century housing, with crescents and cul-de-sacs arranged around main roads and broken up by large green spaces, sports grounds and allotments.
The most distinctive feature is Hanworth Park, a broad open area that was once home to an aerodrome and to the grounds of Hanworth Park House. Along its edge runs the Longford River, an artificial channel dug in the seventeenth century to carry water to the royal parks at Hampton Court, which cuts through the area in long, deliberate lines.
