Harrisonburg sits in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, between the Blue Ridge to the east and the Allegheny ridges to the west. At its heart is Court Square, where the county courthouse stands at the centre of the old downtown, with the main streets meeting around it. From there, the city's grid spreads out over gently rolling valley land.
The largest single feature on the map is the campus of James Madison University, which fills a broad area south of downtown with quads, playing fields and curving campus roads.
