Ko e mape
Hatvan lies in Heves County on the Zagyva river, about sixty kilometres northeast of Budapest. Its map is dominated by rail. The town grew as a junction where lines toward Miskolc, Szolnok, Salgótarján and the capital meet, and the tracks spread across the landscape in long curves, framing the streets between them. Few towns of its size show their transport history so clearly from above.
The Zagyva runs past the town on a gentle course, and the historic centre sits close to it. Here stands the Grassalkovich Palace, an eighteenth-century baroque residence that now houses the Hungarian Museum of Hunting. Around the palace and the main square the street pattern is compact and slightly irregular, reflecting the older layout that existed before the railway arrived.
Beyond the centre, residential streets and industrial areas fill the space between the rail lines, and the land opens toward the northern edge of the Great Hungarian Plain, with the Mátra hills rising to the northeast. A Hatvan map poster brings the river, the palace quarter and the web of tracks together in one composition.

The baroque palace near the centre, now the Hungarian Museum of Hunting, sits within its grounds close to the Zagyva. It anchors the historic quarter and gives the map a clear focal point.
The river runs along the town in a gentle line, separating the centre from open land. Its course adds a soft natural counterweight to the precise geometry of the railway.
