Ko e mape
Haydock sits between St Helens and Wigan in the old coalfield country of south-west Lancashire, now part of Merseyside. On a map, its defining lines are transport corridors. The A580 East Lancashire Road cuts across the area, and the M6 passes close by. Around them lie terraced streets from the mining era, later housing estates, and business parks built near the junctions.
The town is best known for Haydock Park, a racecourse that hosts major flat and jump meetings. From above, the course is a clean, elongated loop surrounded by open ground. It's one of the most recognisable shapes in the area and gives the map a clear focal point.
A Haydock map poster sets these layers against each other. There are the big curves of the motorway and the arterial road, the smaller geometry of streets that grew up around the collieries, and the racecourse sitting apart. The result is typical of northern English towns, where industrial history and modern transport overlap on the same ground.
The racecourse's long oval is the standout shape on the map. It's drawn as a clean loop inside open green space next to the town.
The A580 crosses the area as a strong, straight line. It was one of Britain's early purpose-built intercity roads, linking Liverpool and Manchester, and it gives the composition a firm horizontal axis.
Older terraced rows form compact, regular blocks that contrast with the looser curves of later estates. They're a quiet reminder of the town's mining past.
