Heerlen lies in the hilly south of Limburg, a few kilometres from Aachen and the German border. Its map is less compact than most Dutch cities. Neighbourhoods are spread out across low hills and valleys, linked by ring roads and radial routes, with green corridors between them. It is the main city of the Parkstad region, a group of municipalities that grew together.
That dispersed pattern comes from coal. For much of the twentieth century Heerlen was the centre of Dutch mining, and colliery villages and workers' districts grew around the pits. Far older layers lie beneath. The Roman settlement of Coriovallum stood here, and the remains of its bath complex are displayed in the Thermenmuseum.
A Heerlen map poster reflects this unusual mix: a small central core, suburbs following the terrain, and the broad lines of roads that tie the region together. The hills give the street pattern a softness that sets it apart from the flat grids elsewhere in the Netherlands.

Former colliery neighbourhoods are spread across the hills, each with its own street pattern, now linked into one continuous urban area.
Rolling South Limburg terrain continues right up to the German border, giving the roads and parks a curving, contour-driven layout.
