Heishan is a county town in the Jinzhou area of Liaoning, set on the broad, flat plain west of the Liao River. With almost no relief to work around, the town is laid out in straight lines. Its main streets run on a clear grid, and the rectangular blocks are easy to read from above. Beyond the last buildings, fields and rural roads extend to the horizon in the same orderly geometry.
The name means Black Mountain, which is unusual for such level country. The town serves as a market and administrative centre for the surrounding farmland, and its plan reflects that role, with wide avenues, a clear centre and a railway on one side.
