Hepo is the seat of Jiexi County in Jieyang, in the hill country of eastern Guangdong. The town lies in a valley where a river winds between ranges of low hills, and the built-up area spreads along the flat ground beside the water. On a map the shape of the valley is clear. The streets fill the lowland and stop where the slopes begin.
The older centre is a dense cluster of narrow streets, with newer districts and wider roads extending along the valley in both directions.
