Heqiao lies in the far north of Jiangsu Province, on the broad river plain near the border with Shandong. The land is almost perfectly flat, and from above the town appears as a compact settlement of streets and blocks surrounded by fields. Roads and irrigation channels run in straight lines across the countryside, dividing it into a regular, closely woven pattern.
Water is never far away in this part of China. Canals, ditches and small rivers thread across the plain, and there are lakes in the wider region to the north. On a map they add a second set of lines to the road grid, sometimes running parallel and sometimes cutting across at an angle.
