Ko e mape
Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, around twenty miles north of central London. The town grew at a point where four rivers join: the Lea, the Beane, the Rib and the Mimram. On a map this gives it an unusual structure. Several blue threads meet near the centre, and the old streets fit themselves between the water channels, not around a single straight axis.
The centre keeps a medieval layout of short streets and small squares, with the grounds of Hertford Castle beside the river. Only the gatehouse and walls remain of the original castle. Just east, Hartham Common forms a large open space divided by water. The Lee Navigation begins in Hertford, taking the river south towards London as a straightened, managed channel. Its line is easy to follow on paper.
Two railway stations, Hertford East and Hertford North, sit on different lines at opposite sides of town, a detail that often surprises visitors. A Hertford map poster shows a place defined as much by water as by roads. It is a small, legible market town whose shape still makes sense when you trace where the rivers meet.
The Lea, Beane, Rib and Mimram converge near the centre. Their channels branch across the map and give the town its distinctive, water-divided shape.
A green space beside the river marks the site of Hertford Castle, with its surviving gatehouse and walls, set just off the medieval streets.
The Lee Navigation starts here and heads south as a straightened waterway, a clear engineered line leaving town towards London.
