Horwich is on the northwestern edge of Greater Manchester, part of the Bolton borough, below the West Pennine Moors. On a map the town has a clear slope: rows of terraced houses run up the hillside, and above them the streets stop and open moorland begins. Rivington Pike and Winter Hill rise above it, and the reservoirs around Rivington lie just to the northwest.
Horwich grew rapidly after the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway opened its locomotive works here in the 1880s, and the long, regular terraces built for the workers still define much of the town. The site of the old works, with its large sheds, is still visible on the map. At Middlebrook, on the southern edge, the stadium of Bolton Wanderers and a retail park add newer, much larger shapes.
A Horwich map poster shows the town's many layers side by side: dense terraces, the outlines of the railway industry, new estates and the empty moor above. The moorland gives the design breathing room at the top, and the neat terraced streets add rhythm below. It is a strong, balanced map that people from the area recognise immediately.
Long parallel rows of houses built for the railway workers climb the hillside, forming the tight, regular pattern that gives the centre its character.
North of town the streets stop at the West Pennine Moors, where only a few tracks lead up toward Rivington Pike and Winter Hill, leaving open space on the map.
On the southern edge, a football stadium, retail park and motorway junction introduce large modern shapes that contrast with the old terraced grid.

Ko e ha Horwich
For anyone who grew up in Horwich, walked up the Pike on Good Friday or followed Bolton Wanderers at Middlebrook, this map carries a lot of memories. It works well in a hallway, a study or as a present for someone who has moved away.
The title, subtitle and coordinates line can say whatever you like, from a street name to a family date. Choose among five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Noir looks especially good with the dark moorland above the town.
