Irákleio is a municipality in the northern suburbs of Athens, not to be confused with Heraklion on Crete. Its map shows a tightly built suburban district: residential blocks packed along straight and slightly angled streets, with main avenues cutting through and the Line 1 electric railway passing along the area with a station of its own.
The suburb's early history is linked to Bavarian soldiers who arrived with King Otto in the nineteenth century, and a Catholic church from that era remains. Today Irákleio is a densely populated residential area bordering Marousi and other northern suburbs.
