Izhevsk grew up around a dam. In 1760 an ironworks was founded on the Izh River, and the reservoir it created, now known as the Izhevsk Pond, still dominates the map. It stretches for kilometres north of the centre, a long pale shape with the dense city pressed against its southern and eastern banks.
Around that water the streets follow a clear grid, laid out in the nineteenth century and extended during Soviet growth. Long parallel avenues run across gently rising ground, and larger blocks of housing districts fill in toward the edges. The Izh itself continues below the dam as a narrow line cutting through the southern neighbourhoods, and it reads clearly from above.
As capital of the Udmurt Republic, Izhevsk is known for manufacturing, above all for the rifles designed by Mikhail Kalashnikov, whose museum stands in the centre. An Izhevsk map poster reduces all of that industry to line: the dam, the pond, the grid and the river, drawn in black on white.
The eighteenth-century reservoir behind the ironworks dam forms the largest shape on the map, a long body of water extending north from the city centre.
Straight, evenly spaced streets run across the rising ground east of the pond, giving the centre a regular, almost ruled appearance.
South of the dam the river narrows to a thin winding line, threading between neighbourhoods on its way toward the Kama basin.
