Jaén is a city in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru, on the Amazonian side of the Andes in the wider Marañón basin. Unlike many Andean towns, it sits relatively low, in a warm valley, and on a map it appears as a compact street grid spreading along the valley floor with steep, folded ground rising around it.
The surrounding province is one of Peru's major coffee-growing areas, and the city serves as a market and service centre for farms in the hills. Roads leave the valley following the contours, heading toward the coast and further into the Amazon region, and their twisting lines contrast with the straight blocks in town.
