Jiaozuo lies in north-western Henan, where the flat plain north of the Yellow River meets the southern edge of the Taihang Mountains. The map reflects this meeting point: a regular grid of streets across the lowland, and to the north a line of hills where development gives way to steep, open terrain.
The city grew as a coal-mining centre, and its road network shows the planning of an industrial town, with long east to west avenues and districts laid out in blocks.
