Jietou lies in western Yunnan, in the Tengchong area not far from the border with Myanmar. The town sits on a broad valley floor, and from above its streets form a small, dense cluster surrounded by open farmland. To the east the ground rises steeply toward the Gaoligong Mountains, one of the great north–south ranges of this part of Asia.
The flat valley is divided into many small fields, laced with irrigation channels and farm roads. In early spring these fields are widely known for rapeseed in bloom, which draws visitors to the area. On the map, the difference between the level basin and the surrounding slopes is striking: straight, fine lines on the floor, and curving tracks as the land climbs.
