On a map, Jombang is a modest town in the wide lowland of East Java, where the Brantas River swings past on its way to the sea near Surabaya. The centre is a grid of short streets around the town square, the alun-alun, with the main road and the railway running east to west. Jombang is widely known as a town of pesantren, Islamic boarding schools. The best known is Tebuireng, founded by Hasyim Asy'ari, who also founded Nahdlatul Ulama, one of the largest Muslim organisations in the world.
