Kaihua is the central urban area of Wenshan, the seat of the Wenshan Zhuang and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in southeastern Yunnan. The city occupies a valley between green hills, and its map shows a dense centre following the valley floor, with newer districts expanding into the surrounding flatter ground.
The prefecture is widely known as the main producing region of sanqi, a medicinal plant used in traditional Chinese medicine, and the trade in this root has long been important to the local economy. The region is also home to many Zhuang and Miao communities.
