Kangāvar lies in Kermanshah Province in western Iran, on a high plain surrounded by the ridges of the Zagros. The town grew along the historic route from the Iranian plateau to Mesopotamia, the road used for centuries by caravans between Hamadan and Kermanshah. Its streets gather around the centre, and main roads run out across the farmland of the plain.
Kangāvar is best known for a large ancient complex on a raised stone platform in the middle of town, usually identified as a temple of Anahita, the Iranian goddess of water and fertility. Its dating has been debated, but its massive stone terraces and column remains are among the notable ancient monuments of western Iran, and on a map they form a clear rectangle in the urban fabric.
A Kangāvar map poster shows the town's streets organised around that ancient site, with the historic road passing through and the plain opening out on all sides. The combination of a large geometric ruin and a living town gives the print an unusual focal point, suitable for anyone with ties to Kermanshah or an interest in Iran's past.
The large raised enclosure of the ancient complex appears as a distinct rectangular block in the centre of town, surrounded by dense residential streets.
The main road through town follows the ancient route between the plateau and Mesopotamia, still the backbone of the town's layout today.
Farmland spreads across the flat valley around the town, with the mountain ridges beyond marking the edges of this high agricultural basin.
