Kaolack sits on the Saloum River in the heart of Senegal's groundnut basin. For much of the twentieth century it was one of the country's main centres for the peanut trade, and its river port shipped produce toward the coast. On the map, the city spreads away from the water in a broad grid of blocks, with major roads converging on the centre from several directions.
Near the river, the ground flattens into salt pans, and salt production remains an important local industry. Kaolack's central market is one of the largest in the region. The city is also a major Islamic centre, home to the Grand Mosque of Medina Baye, associated with Sheikh Ibrahima Niass, and the Medina Baye district draws large numbers of pilgrims.
A Kaolack map poster shows a crossroads city defined by trade, faith and the river. In black and white, the grid of the centre forms a dense, even texture, the main roads radiate outward like lines on a compass, and the salt flats and river channels at the edge dissolve into soft, open shapes. It is an honest portrait of an important Senegalese city.
The river forms the city's watery edge, its channels and banks giving way to flat, open land that appears as calm space on the map beside the dense streets.
The market area at the heart of the city is a tight cluster of blocks and narrow lanes, the busiest part of the map and a focal point for roads from every direction.
The district around the Grand Mosque forms a distinct neighbourhood within the city, a centre of the Tijaniyya Sufi order that draws pilgrims from across West Africa and beyond.
