Karlskrona was founded in 1680 as the base of the Swedish navy, and it was planned from the start on a group of islands in the Blekinge archipelago. The main island, Trossö, holds the city centre, laid out in a broad baroque grid with wide streets running toward the water. On a map the shape is unmistakable: a compact block of streets surrounded by sea, bridges and smaller islands.
At the centre of Trossö is Stortorget, one of the largest squares in northern Europe, framed by two churches. The naval base, still in use, spreads its docks, shipyards and fortifications over the southern part of the city and neighbouring islands. The Naval Port of Karlskrona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised as a well-preserved planned European naval town.
Beyond the city, the archipelago breaks into countless islands and skerries, and the map becomes a play of land and water. A Karlskrona map poster shows the regular streets of Trossö set against this irregular coastline, a composition in which planning and nature meet on the same sheet. Few Scandinavian cities look as distinctive from above.
The island's straight, wide streets form a clear baroque plan, with long axes running from the central square toward the shore in several directions.
The great square at the heart of the city appears as a large open rectangle within the grid, one of the most recognisable shapes on the poster.
Islands, bridges and narrow sounds surround the centre, turning the edges of the map into a detailed pattern of coastlines and open water.

Ko e ha Karlskrona
Karlskrona matters to naval officers, sailors, students at the local institute of technology and anyone who has spent a summer in the archipelago. Its map is also simply beautiful, a planned island city set in open water, and it works as a design piece even for those who have never visited.
