Ko e mape
Ké-Macina sits on the bank of the Niger River in Mali's Ségou region, downstream from Ségou where the river begins to spread into its broad inner delta. On a map the town is a cluster of irregular streets and compounds pressed against the river. Its shape is set by the water on one side and open Sahelian land on the other.
The name Macina, also written Massina, is carried by the wider region along the Niger. It was the heartland of the nineteenth-century Massina Empire founded by Seku Amadu. Today the area depends on the river for farming, fishing and transport, and the seasonal rise and fall of the Niger shapes life in towns like Ké-Macina.
A Ké-Macina map poster shows a settlement defined by its river. The broad band of the Niger dominates the composition, the town's dense lanes gather at its edge, and tracks lead out across the plain. The contrast between flowing water and compact streets gives the print a strong, simple structure.
The river is the town's defining feature. Its wide course and changing banks fill a large part of the frame and give the map its main line.
Close-set streets and compounds form an irregular, tightly knit settlement along the water. On paper they become a textured cluster of fine lines.
Beyond the town, tracks cross flat, open land toward fields and neighbouring villages. They thread lightly through the space around the settlement.

Ko e ha Ké-Macina
For people from Ké-Macina, and for anyone connected to the Niger's inner delta, the map is a way to keep the river and the town together on one wall. It is a quiet tribute to a place shaped by water.
