Khimki lies just outside Moscow's northwestern boundary, and its map is organised along several strong lines. The Leningradskoye highway and the newer M11 motorway to Saint Petersburg run through the area, while the Moscow Canal and the Khimki Reservoir form a long body of water along the city's southeastern side. Between them, the city spreads in residential districts of apartment blocks.
The reservoir is one of the most distinctive features on the map, a narrow lake created when the canal was built in the 1930s.
