Kitui is the capital of Kitui County, in the semi-arid eastern part of Kenya, several hours' drive east of Nairobi. The town lies among low hills and rocky outcrops, and on a map its streets form a compact centre around the market area, with roads leading out across a landscape of scrub and small farms.
The surrounding countryside is crossed by seasonal rivers, which are often dry, sandy channels for much of the year and fill quickly during the rains. These faint lines give the map a pattern of branching drainage, together with footpaths and tracks connecting scattered homesteads.
Kitui is at the heart of Ukambani, the homeland of the Kamba people, and serves as the main administrative and market centre for a large, mostly rural county. A Kitui map poster captures the town's small, clear centre and the open land around it.
Kitui's core is a small, dense cluster of streets around its market and administrative buildings, the clearest point of focus on the map.
Dry riverbeds wind through the surrounding land, appearing as thin branching lines that show how water moves through this semi-arid region.
Low hills and rocky ridges shape the routes around town, bending roads and leaving open, unbuilt ground between them.
