Kluczbork lies in the northern part of the Opole Voivodeship, on the small Stobrawa river. Its old centre is organised around a rectangular market square with the town hall in the middle, a medieval pattern shared by many towns in Silesia. Beyond the line of the former walls, newer streets, housing estates and industrial areas spread over flat farmland.
The name comes from the German Kreuzburg, recalling the Knights of the Cross with the Red Star, who founded the town in the thirteenth century. The writer Gustav Freytag was born here in 1816. Later, the arrival of the railway turned Kluczbork into a junction, and several lines still meet at the station on the edge of the centre.
