Kopawor, a name also written as Kupwara in many sources, lies in the north of the Kashmir Valley in Jammu and Kashmir. From above, the town is a cluster of streets on a flat valley floor, surrounded by farmland and framed by mountains that rise on several sides. The flat ground and the steep slopes around it give the map a clear structure.
Streams come down from the higher ground and cross the valley in thin, irregular lines. Roads follow the easiest routes between settlements and often run beside the water. Outside the centre, fields and orchards form a patchwork of small plots, and villages appear as small knots of streets connected by country lanes.
