Kos is in the Dodecanese, close to Turkey's Bodrum peninsula, and on a map it is long and slim, running from northeast to southwest. A ridge of mountains follows the southern side of the island. The north coast is lower and flatter, lined with beaches and small resorts, and a single main road runs along most of the island's length.
Kos town is at the eastern end. There, the castle of the Knights of St John guards the harbour, and ancient remains lie open among the modern streets. Much of the town was rebuilt after an earthquake in 1933, which also exposed large parts of the ancient city. West of the town the island narrows and ends at the Kefalos peninsula, with its broad bay.
Kos is known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the physician of classical Greece. Its best-known ancient site is the Asklepieion, a healing sanctuary built on terraces above the town, and an old plane tree in the town centre is traditionally linked to him. A Kos map poster traces the island from its busy eastern harbour to the quiet hills of the far west.
The fortress of the Knights of St John sits beside the harbour in Kos town. Its thick walls form a solid, angular shape at the water's edge.
Southwest of Kos town, the ancient healing sanctuary is laid out in stepped terraces on a hillside. A road climbs to it from the edge of town.
At the western end the island narrows and then broadens into a hilly headland. It frames a wide bay where the land curves back around the sea.

Kos brings back summer holidays, bike rides along the flat north coast and evenings in the old town by the harbour. The long, slim outline, with Turkey just across the water, makes an elegant print.
