Ko e mape
Kosti lies in central Sudan on the western bank of the White Nile, in wide, flat country where the river is the main feature for many kilometres. The map is simple and strong: a broad band of water on one side, and a town of low, regular blocks spreading away from it across level ground.
The town grew in the early twentieth century and is often said to take its name from a Greek trader who settled here. It became an important junction where the railway crosses the White Nile and where river boats traditionally set off southwards, making Kosti a link between northern and southern Sudan and, later, South Sudan.
Bridges carry road and rail across the river towards Rabak on the eastern bank, drawing clear straight lines over the water. A Kosti map poster keeps this geography plain and legible: the river, the crossings, the port frontage and the open pattern of streets, a record of a place shaped by transport routes more than by monuments.
The broad, slow river runs along the eastern edge of town, its wide channel and low banks dominating the composition and giving the map its sense of scale.
Road and rail bridges reach across the White Nile towards Rabak, forming the few straight lines that interrupt the long, uninterrupted sweep of water.
Away from the river, the town spreads over flat ground in a mostly regular pattern of streets and blocks, with main roads leading out across the open plain.
