Kovdor lies in the southwest of Murmansk Oblast, north of the Arctic Circle and close to the border with Finland. On a map the town is a compact grid of apartment blocks and streets, set in a landscape of lakes, bogs and forest that fills most of the sheet.
The town was built around mining. A large open-pit mine nearby extracts iron ore along with other minerals including apatite, and from above the pit and its spoil heaps form a striking pattern of concentric terraces and flat-topped shapes, clearly different from the natural terrain.
