Kronach, in Upper Franconia on the edge of the Frankenwald, grew where the rivers Haßlach, Kronach and Rodach come together. The map shows water arriving from several directions and joining below the old town, with the valleys spreading out as green corridors between wooded hills. Roads and railway follow these valleys, giving the town a natural, branching structure.
Above the confluence rises the walled upper town, a tight grid of lanes on a narrow ridge. Above that stands the Festung Rosenberg, a large fortress with bastioned walls whose star-like outline is one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
