Kulu sits on the high, level plateau of Central Anatolia, in the north of Konya province. From above, the town is a neat block of streets set in wide, almost treeless farmland, with long straight roads crossing the plain toward Ankara and Konya. Few places show a town's footprint as clearly against its surroundings.
The street pattern is largely regular, with blocks of houses and apartments laid out in rows, and a denser, older area near the centre. Beyond the edge of town, field boundaries take over, drawing a faint patchwork of long strips. A shallow lake near the town, known for its birdlife, adds a soft shape to the surrounding plain.
Kulu is also known far from Anatolia. Many people from the district emigrated to Sweden in the late twentieth century, and the links between the two places remain strong. A Kulu map poster often ends up on a wall in Stockholm, a quiet reminder of a town on the steppe.
