Kunyang is the seat of Pingyang County, part of the city of Wenzhou in southern Zhejiang. It sits on a narrow coastal plain where hills come close to the flat land, and from above the town appears as a dense urban core with newer districts spreading across the plain. Waterways and channels run through the area, typical of the low-lying land near this coast.
Like much of the Wenzhou region, the area around Kunyang is known for its small private manufacturers and its entrepreneurial tradition. Over recent decades the town has expanded quickly, with new roads, housing estates and industrial zones added around the older centre, while the surrounding hills remain wooded and largely undeveloped.
