San Cristóbal de La Laguna lies on a high valley plateau in northern Tenerife, a short distance inland from Santa Cruz. From above, the old town forms a clear grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks, surrounded by newer neighbourhoods, farmland and the slopes of the Anaga mountains to the northeast. The plain was once the site of a lagoon, which gave the city its name.
The historic centre was laid out at the end of the fifteenth century without defensive walls, following an open, regular plan. That plan became a model for many colonial cities in the Americas, and the old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. On a map it appears as an unusually tidy rectangle of streets, crossed by long parallel roads with churches and plazas set into the pattern.
La Laguna was once the capital of Tenerife and of the Canary Islands, and it remains home to the University of La Laguna, the archipelago's oldest university. Tenerife North Airport lies at the edge of the plateau. A La Laguna map poster shows how the orderly historic core sits within a wider mesh of suburbs, with mountains and fields framing the city.

The city spreads across a high, fairly level plateau between hills, the former site of a lagoon, giving its streets a clear and open setting.
To the northeast, roads climb into the Anaga mountains, where the dense city grid gives way to winding routes, forest and scattered settlements.

Ko e ha La Laguna
Students, residents and island families often think of La Laguna as the calm, historic counterpart to the coastal cities. Its grid is instantly recognisable on paper, and it makes a composed, architectural piece for a study or living room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line with a graduation year, a family name or any short text. Choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand; Blueprint highlights the precise geometry of the old town.
