La Quinta lies in the Coachella Valley of Southern California, at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains. The city is laid out on the desert floor, with residential streets and golf communities stopping abruptly where the mountains rise. From above, the contrast is striking: dense, organised development on one side, bare rocky slopes and canyons on the other.
Much of the map is shaped by golf. Courses at PGA West and elsewhere form long, winding ribbons of fairway, threaded with artificial lakes and cul-de-sacs. Between them, Highway 111 and wide arterials such as Washington Street and Jefferson Street create a strong grid. A La Quinta map poster captures both scales, the straight valley roads and the looping private streets.
The city takes its name from La Quinta Resort, which opened in 1926 as a quiet retreat favoured by Hollywood figures and remains a landmark today. Old Town La Quinta provides a small walkable centre, while the Cove neighbourhood sits in a bay of the mountains, its streets forming a neat grid enclosed by rock on three sides.
This neighbourhood fills a sheltered bay in the Santa Rosa range with a regular grid of streets, framed by steep rock that gives it a crisp outline.
PGA West and other courses spread across the south of the city, their fairways, water hazards and curving access roads creating intricate shapes on the map.
The Santa Rosa Mountains rise abruptly along the western and southern edge of town, leaving large empty areas on the poster that frame the built-up valley.
