Lago Norte is an administrative region of Brazil's Federal District, set on a peninsula that stretches into the northern arm of Lake Paranoá. On a map the lake wraps around it, and the residential streets follow the land's length in long curves. Much of the shoreline is taken up by private lots running down to the water, so the edges look fringed and green.
Brasília was planned from scratch in the late 1950s, and Lake Paranoá is an artificial reservoir created as part of that project. Lago Norte grew up as one of the lakeside residential areas beyond the monumental core. Its layout of sinuous roads and large plots is a clear break from the axial geometry of the Plano Piloto across the water.
A Lago Norte map poster shows a quieter side of the modernist capital. The peninsula's outline, the water around three sides and the softly branching streets make an unusual, almost botanical shape. People who know Brasília will recognise it at once, and people who don't will still see the pull between land and lake.

Lake Paranoá was formed as part of Brasília's founding plan. Its wide, branching arms give the map broad empty areas that set off the dense streets.
Streets run the length of the peninsula and branch off towards the water, each ending in lots that lead down to the shore.
