Las Tunas, capital of the province of the same name, sits on the flat plains of eastern Cuba. From above, its structure is easy to read. A compact colonial-era grid forms the centre, and newer districts spread outward in looser blocks. With no hills or coastline to shape it, the city grows fairly evenly in every direction.
The Carretera Central, Cuba's long east–west highway, crosses the city and gives the map a clear main axis. Railway lines add another set of straight strokes. Beyond the edges, the pattern opens into fields and scattered settlements, a reminder of the agricultural country around the city.
