Lashkar Gāh is the capital of Helmand province in southern Afghanistan, set where the Helmand and Arghandab rivers meet. The town was largely laid out in the mid-twentieth century as the centre of a large irrigation project, and much of its core still follows a planned grid of straight streets and rectangular blocks.
The name recalls Lashkari Bazar, the ruins of a medieval palace complex associated with the Ghaznavid dynasty that lie near the river.
