Lawrenceville is the county seat of Gwinnett County, north-east of Atlanta. It was founded in 1821 and named after Captain James Lawrence, the naval officer remembered for the words Don't give up the ship. At its centre is a traditional courthouse square, with a small grid of streets around the historic courthouse.
Beyond the square, the map changes quickly. Main roads radiate outward, and between them lie winding residential streets, cul-de-sacs, shopping centres and wooded creek corridors typical of metro Atlanta. Georgia Gwinnett College occupies a large campus to the south of the old centre.
