Le Markstein lies high in the southern Vosges, in Alsace, on a col along the main ridge of the range. It is a small place: a few hotels, lift lines and parking areas at a crossroads of mountain roads. From above the settlement barely registers, while the surrounding terrain of rounded summits, forest and high meadow fills the frame, cut by the thin lines of the roads that meet here.
The most important of those roads is the Route des Crêtes, which follows the Vosges ridge for many kilometres and was originally built for military purposes during the First World War. On a Le Markstein map poster it runs across the sheet like a spine, with smaller roads dropping off it into the valleys on either side.
The Grand Ballon, highest summit of the Vosges, rises a short distance away. In winter Le Markstein offers skiing on gentle slopes, and in summer it is a well-known spot for paragliding and a regular waypoint for road cyclists, including the Tour de France. The map captures the ridge-top character of the place, with valleys falling away on both sides.
The ridge road runs along the Vosges summits through the col. On the poster it is the dominant line, tracing the crest and connecting the scattered high points.
Several roads meet at Le Markstein, climbing from the valleys to the ridge. Their junction creates a small, clear focal point in an otherwise open landscape.
Steep wooded slopes drop away on both sides of the ridge. Their contour lines give depth to the map and emphasise how high the station sits above the valleys.
