Leawood lies in Johnson County, Kansas, on the southern side of the Kansas City metro. Its eastern boundary is State Line Road, which here marks the border with Missouri. From above, the city is mostly residential, with curving streets, cul-de-sacs and generous lots. Golf courses and parks weave through the neighbourhoods, and creek valleys run through much of it.
The northern part of the city is older and more compact, while the south opened up later with larger subdivisions and commercial areas such as Town Center Plaza. Interstate 435 cuts across the city, and parks such as Ironwoods add broad wooded areas to the southern half of the map.
