From above, Lexington looks like a wheel. Old turnpikes run out from the downtown grid in every direction, towards Richmond, Nicholasville, Versailles, Paris and Georgetown. New Circle Road ties them together in a loop, and Man o' War Boulevard traces a wider arc to the south. The spokes and rings give the city a clear shape that is easy to read even at poster scale.
The outer edge is just as distinctive. In 1958 Lexington drew the first urban growth boundary in the United States. Because of it, the dense street pattern ends fairly abruptly and gives way to the long fence lines and farm lanes of the Bluegrass.
